During the COVID-19 pandemic, individuals have taken action and are looking to build sustainable lifestyles that are better for their health and kinder with the environment. According to Google Trends, in the ninety days after Earth Day (April 22nd) search interest in “How to live a sustainable lifestyle” increased by more than 4,550%.

But still, sustainability is a concept that often is not very clear to the majority of the public, but why sustainability in fashion?

Sustainability is the next big trend for all industries so it is imperative to make drastic changes to achieve a relevant result. The fashion industry is transforming itself to become more sustainable and transparent, the fast pacing business model is no longer suitable for the future of this industry. The urge is to address the necessary changes that have to be done to save the magic of this creative world. A new conscience with new practices, values, habits and ways of shopping needs to arise, so we must inform ourselves so that we can make better decisions and protect our people and our planet.

On Wednesday 20th of May, Condé Nast launched “The Sustainable Fashion Glossary” created in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) at the London College of Fashion (LCF), University of Arts London (UAL).

This glossary is an open-to-all free online resource, its main objective is to facilitate the understanding of over 250 terms and definitions around sustainable fashion and the fashion industry’s role in the climate emergency.

“The Glossary sets out a common language with consistent definitions of key fashion and sustainability concepts, supported by fact-based explanations and references to provide further clarity. This work draws upon a series of guiding principles and frameworks that underpin CSF’s work. It is a crystallization of its research and educational practices, bringing academic rigor and accuracy to its contents.”
